One passport, one picture, three skin colors, same government – how is this so?
It’s a question posed in the piece Detrás de la oreja (Black Behind the Ears). Many Dominicans question this practice because it seems to them incongruous that, in a country where more than 90 percent of the people are Black, racial identity continues to be defined in these documents by the amorphous terms claro, oscuro, indio and combinations thereof.
